A Terrible Scare

On the 28th of July, we had a terrible scare. Matthias suffered a febrile convulsion, which is when the temperature goes high very quickly and the body can not handle it. His eyes rolled to the back of his head, lost consciousness then went into convulsions. This all happened while I was holding him. I don't think I have ever been so scared in my life, neither has Haukur. At first we had no idea what was going on, then we realized the attack. Without a seconds hesitation, we jumped into the car and headed for the emergency room. There are a few things I am every grateful for that day, besides the fact that Matthias was fine after, was that we had a car and that we didn't have to wait in line at the emergency room. Most of all I am grateful that I was not alone with Matti when it happened. I don't know what I would have done.
With some children, they go into febrile convulsions every time they have a high fever. I just hope this will not be the case with Matthias. As a child I suffered from the same thing, but mine was worse. I had two attacks every day for about one and a half weeks. I can now understand what my mom and grandparents went through. I remember my grandmother telling me, that once she had to throw me into a fountain, just to bring down my temperature. Back then, the doctors in Zimbabwe had no idea what was wrong with me, so it was a while before they new what to do. Thank god that is not the case now. Now all we have to do, is try and keep his temperature down with paracetamol and give him cool baths. We're keeping our fingers crossed that it won't happen a gain.
